Love letter #20: The love of a friend

I had the privilege of being with some old friends today. The love of a friend makes you feel comfortable and warm; familiar and safe-- yet, still challenged and inspired.

We know true friends by their consistent, almost familial devotion, in good times and bad:

A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for a time of adversity.  Proverbs 17:17

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

It's amazing, but the creator of the universe even chose to call us friends. He used the term 'friend' to describe our access to the knowledge of his work in the earth and the Kingdom of Heaven. In the middle of this passage (below) there is a promise for enduring productivity for His chosen. But this promise is wonderfully sandwiched between friendship, and a command to 'love one another'.

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other. John 15:15-17

Lord, teach us how to love one another like a reliable friend and bear fruit like we were chosen.  Amen.
